Collective Worship Week of 11 May 2020

The Theme for our Collective Worship this half term is Friendship.

This week we're thinking about 'learning to listen' to our friends.

Before we start... you might like to have a look at the video made by Mrs Crane and some of the children who are in school.  Mrs Lockwood got in touch to ask us to help provide this as part of a wider project for the Diocese.

Monday 11th May

This week we will be thinking about the story from the Bible when Samuel heard God.    Samuel lived in the temple helping the priests and learning about God.  Eli was a very important man, but he was old and Samuel helped him.

You can find the story in the Old Testament, in 1 Samuel 3: 1-18  This link will take you to the International Children’s Bible version of the text.

Maybe you could find some teddies and act it out, or use old loo-roll tubes to ‘make’ the characters and design a set in a box.

Samuel didn’t realise who it was who was talking with him.  Sometimes we find it hard to hear what our friends are saying to us.  Sometimes we aren’t very good at listening.  Have you ever been so excited to share something with a friend that you haven’t listened to what they’ve had to say to you?

Tuesday 12th May

What’s your favourite type of sweet?  I really don’t like liquorice allsorts, I never have done.  Does that mean that if they’re your favourites that you can’t be my friend?  Of course not!  We’re all different.

I don’t think it’s very important if you and your friend have different favourite sweets, or even that you enjoy different games – we’re all different.  But isn’t it important to find out what’s important to your friends?  You might know lots about what your friend likes to do, but sometimes it’s hard to really listen and understand what’s important to others.

Have a read of Bella and Barney’s drama.  Find someone to act it out with.

Bella was really upset when Barney didn’t bother to listen carefully to what she was telling him.

How can you work hard to really listen to what other people are saying to you.

Here’s a prayer we can use to ask God to help us to listen carefully and thoughtfully to others:

Lord,

Please go before us, to lead;

Walk beside us, to befriend’

Be above us, to protect’

Stay behind us, to direct;

Be beneath us, to support;

And enfold us in your love.

Amen

Wednesday 13th May

First, click on the link and read the story about the Fox, Tortoise and Leopard

In the story, Fox was very kind and caring towards his friend Tortoise and really helped him when he was in a spot of bother. This attitude of caring for others, especially people who are not as fortunate as us, is the same attitude we see in Jesus, in the way he treats other people in so many of the stories about him in the Bible. One piece of advice we can find in the Bible is this:

‘Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.’
(Ephesians 4.32, NIV)

The advice in the story still seems like good advice today. Ask the children if they could all make an effort this week to be extra kind and caring so that everyone in school will know what it is like to have a really good friend.

Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank you that you were kind and caring to all the people you met.
Please help me to be kind and caring, too.
Amen.

Thursday 14th May

Today there’s a special country-wide Collective Worship which you will find on the Oak National Academy website.

Friday 15th May

On Fridays, we used to have our Celebration Collective Worship at Holy Trinity and we invited families.  Tone played piano for us as we came in, we had a short Collective Worship then shared and celebrated awards children had gained outside school and our Stars of the week.

This week, whilst we’re thinking of listening to each other, why not make certificates for members of your family to tell them what you think they deserve to be Star of the Week for.
