Year 3: 2024 - 2025

The Year 3 Teaching Team are Miss Sarah Butcher, Mr Edd Chalkley and Mrs Lynsey Messenger

Mr Chalkley will be teaching Mondays and Tuesdays, while Miss Butcher will be teaching Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We also have the pleasure of support from Mrs Messenger who will be supporting the class full time.

Other staff who will also teach Year 3 are Mr Richard Johnson (Music), Mr Edmunds (RE) Mrs Garrett and Mr Wright, along with our Sports Coaches, Mr Marc Troman and Mrs Katie Whenman.

What we are learning this term

Topic: Our topic this term is ‘Misty Mountain, Winding River’. We will be learning about the characteristics and features of rivers and mountain ranges around the world, including a detailed exploration of the ecosystems and processes that shape the land around them.

Reading: Reading is carried out on a daily basis, and books are changed regularly. Please ensure your child has their reading book with them at the start and end of each day. Please spend quality time sharing these books with your child. Your child will read regularly with an adult during guided group reading sessions. They will be set a reading target to aim towards, based upon their success in the comprehension AR quizzes they will be taking at the end of each book.

English: We will be writing explanation texts, poetry and fiction linked to our rivers topic this term. Spelling and handwriting will continue to be practised on a weekly basis.

Maths: We continue to use the Maths No Problem scheme whereby children will learn through concrete, pictorial and abstract methods. This term will we focus on: length, mass, volume and money, while keeping other maths skills fresh through using Fluent in 5 sessions.

RE: We will be learning what it is like for someone to follow God.

Adventure School

In order to enrich the curriculum, the children will be exploring the local area on a Monday afternoon starting from January 13th. This will only be possible with support from volunteers so if you are able to help with one or more of these sessions, please contact the office.

For these sessions, please ensure that your child has a warm, waterproof coat and a water bottle. If you would like them to have gloves and a hat this is also fine.

Trips

Throughout the year, we will be engaging in opportunities to venture out of school on trips and activity days. We are only able to offer this superb learning opportunity with the much appreciated help and support of parents who can provide extra hands and supervision. If you are able to offer this, please contact the office to obtain the relevant DBS certificate.

Home Learning: Children have been given a Home Learning book. They will stick new homework in each Friday and are expected to practise the challenges regularly and return the book the following Thursday. There will be a spelling and maths challenge every Friday afternoon based upon this learning.

If there is anything else you wish to discuss, please contact the school office to arrange a time to meet or email the year 3 email: Yr3@beacon-ce-primary.devon.sch.uk

Timetable

Here is the daily timetable for this term. Although there may be some changes for additional activities or visits, we try to follow this as closely as we can. Please take the time to look at this with your child before the school week and to review each day with them afterwards.

Spelling

As well as the weekly spelling focus, children have a list of words that will be taught throughout the year in class. They should aim to be able to spell all of them by the end of Year 4. These can also be practised at home.

X-Tables are extremely important in all aspects of maths learning and understanding. The children are encouraged to play TT-Rockstars regularly and we ask that you support this by giving them opportunities to practise at home.
