Year 3 - 2023 - 2024

The Year 3 Teaching Team are Miss Day, Mrs Morton (TA), Mr Wright (TA) and Mr Pope (TA).

Miss Day will be teaching every day and we also have the pleasure of having Mrs Morton, Mr Wright and Mr Pope working with the class every day. On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Mr Wright will be teaching the class with the support of Mrs Morton and Mr Pope.

Other staff who will also teach Year 3 are Mr Richard Johnson (music) and our Sports Coaches, Mr Marc Troman and Mrs Katie Whenman.

Our topic this term is 'Emperors and Empires'

For our topic this term we will be learning about the history and structure of ancient Rome and the Roman Empire, including a detailed exploration of the Romanisation of Britain.

Home learning project ideas

Here is a list of fun topic-related projects and activities to do at home. We would love to see anything that you choose to do at home to extend your learning about Emperors and Empires. These activities are a great opportunity to get creative and have some educational fun!

What we are learning this term

Reading: This will be carried out on a daily basis, and books are changed regularly. Please ensure your child has their reading book with them at the start and end of each day. Please spend quality time sharing these books with your child. In school, the way we hear children read changes a little as children move from Year 2 to Year 3, and the focus changes from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’. Your child will read regularly with an adult during Guided Group Reading sessions. They will also begin using Accelerated Reader to check for comprehension of the reading. Quizzing for this will be done in class when a child has finished a book. We will not be using the Reading Records, but instead will use the children’s online quizzes to monitor how regularly they are reading and their understanding of the texts. The children will also be heard individually by a volunteer reader on a Wednesday afternoon.

English: We will be writing poetry, myths and narratives linked to our ‘Emperors and Empires’ topic this term. We will strengthen our use of punctuation and develop our vocabulary to become more confident and accurate writers. Spelling and handwriting will continue to be practiced on a weekly basis.

Maths: We continue to use the Maths No Problem scheme whereby children will learn through concrete, pictorial and abstract methods. This term will we focus on Money, Time, Pictograms and Graphs, Fractions and Shapes.

RE: We will be learning about the Trinity and how and why people try to make the world a better place.

Yearly Overview

Spelling

As well as the weekly spelling focus, children have a list of words that will be taught throughout the year in class. They should aim to be able to spell all of them by the end of Year 4. These can also be practiced at home.

X-Tables are extremely important in all aspects of maths learning and understanding. The children are encouraged to play TT-Rockstars regularly and we ask that you support this by giving them opportunities to practise at home.

Class Newsletters

For more information, please find the Year 3 class letters below:

Timetable

Here is the daily timetable for this term. Although there may be some changes for additional activities or visits, we try to follow this as closely as we can. Please take the time to look at this with your child before the school week and to review each day with them afterwards.

PE and Dance

Please wear the following PE uniform to school on a Monday and Friday:

Yellow t-shirt, blue shorts, jogging bottoms/leggings when cold & suitable footwear for all PE sessions.

Home Learning

Children will be given a home learning sheet on Friday to be returned the following Thursday.

Home Learning should be a chance to consolidate and practice the learning we have done in class, with someone at home. Below is a document with a list of ideas, games and activities to help.

If you are finding it challenging, please contact a member of the Year 3 Team. We are here to help!
